Seriously, I supported people's dial-up Internet connection on various flavors of Windows (from Trumpet Winsock on 3.1 to XP) for several years, and most of their problems stemmed from shoddy software on a shoddy architecture.

"Yes, ma'am, I remember walking you through setting up your Dial-up Networking Connection last week. Yes, I know you didn't change the settings. No, I don't know why they were reset. Let's just walk through the setup process again."

"Yes, ma;am, I understand it worked fine before your grandson used it. Maam, if you can't read the screen, I'm not going to be able to walk you through fixing it." (I wound up making a no-charge house call for that one, because the customer lived in the same apartment complex I did.)

"No, sir, I don't know why it's not working properly. However, there is a workaround." (Using a static DNS instead of the DHCP-provided one.)

So if they want to whiz on MS software, I'll let them. At the time, I might have even joined them.

(Oh, and for the record, I'm using Google Groups for Usenet, under Linux, with Firefox. A mouse is a neccesity.)
