Bad Linux Programmers 3752
Without knowing the modem, or communications software, and the local setup (init string, etc.), I might be looking at the modem. Most analog modems have a limited, but specific vocabulary. This is controlled by the Xn command (as well as Qn and Vn). I was hoping my USR could be coaxed into listing these, but apparently not. Qn n=0 Result Codes Sent n=1 Quiet (No Result Codes) n=2 Verbose-Quiet ON Answer Vn n=0 Numeric Responses n=1 Verbal Responses Xn n=0 Basic Result Codes n=1 Extended Result Codes n=2-4 Advanced Result Codes Ahhh, and that may be the answer. The USR manual says that when X=0, the following result codes are available: OK CONNECT RING NO CARRIER ERROR CONNECT lovexx (where lovexx is speeds from 33.6 to 57.3) Notice: No 'BUSY' message. In fact, 'BUSY' (result code 7) is only available in 'X=3' or 'X=4' Neither of the manuals I have for Rockwell based modems (BestData and SIIG) bother to list which result is available in which mode, and Scott Mueller's "Upgrading and Repairing PCs" 10th edition doesn't list it either. For what it's worth, the normal messages pertaining to making a call are: Bad Linux Programmers 3753 Actually, with the exception of some winmodems that don't even have a speaker, that mode is the default at power-on, and... Debian server *slow*. Can't enable DMA I have setup a departmental server that I can't get working in UDMA mode. It's running Debian woody and has a custom 2.6.7 kernel installed. The kernel configuration file is available at www.mbuttey.ac.nz-~prynhart... CONNECT All modes The call went through - there may be a speed suffix NO CARRIER All modes The modem did not find another modem at the other end ERROR All modes You gave an invalid command NO DIAL TONE X=2, X=4 No dial tone detected BUSY X=3, X=4 Line is busy NO ANSWER X=3, X=4 Nothing answered the phone - it kept ringing. (RING or RINGING refers to an incoming call, not outgoing.) So, if the local configuration is using some value of X other than 3 or the default 4, what's the programming sod supposed to do? Old guy
