Linux is a great OS for applications development, servers and so forth because the tools are very inexpensive and in most cases free. Compare that to having to buy toolkits for MS that will cost 1000's of dollars... Linux makes a decent desktop but lags in plugin support, especially ease of installation of said plugins.
