Bootloader problem...HELP

Hi all. I've got a problem with my sons machine. It has 2 harddrives, hda & hdb, and for a while now I have had WinXP installed on hda and Fedora Core 3 installed on hdb. Grub has been installed in hda:s MBR. Yesterday I got a *very* stupid idea, just after I have pushed the startbutton, I pulled out the power to the hdb disk. I thought I should run the machine with just 1 harddrive for a while, see if that could solve a heat problem I have with this machine (but that's another story). The machine then hang before identifying any IDE drives, so I put the power back to the hdb disk and pulled the other out, thinking I had pulled the wrong one, and rebooted. Now the IDE-disk-identifying procedure works, and of course only hdb is showing and the machine stops at a grub prompt. So, I put back the power to the disk, now both disks are powered on, and reboot. Same thing again, instead of the usual grub Logo and choice of boot, I just get a grub prompt. I have tested some of the commands there, but nothing works, Im no Grub-Guru so...:-) Now Im starting to feel desperate, so I boot with a Fedora Core3 boot-CD, thinking I will do a resque install and rebuild the MBR. I choose "linux resque" after booting the Fedora CD and I choose upgrading the system. When the installer comes to the part where I may choose bootloader it says there is NO bootloader installed, so I choose to install a new one, and I choose to install it to MBR on hda. ALl parbreastions looks fine in diskdruid here by the way. The upgrade finishes but the installer will NOT install any bootloader because I have no kernel packages installed (?). OK, now I'm really desperate, so I start a fresh install of Fedora on hdb, and again choose to install grub to MBR on hda. Installation goes fine, but when booting I still get the grub-prompt and no more.

What can have happened here, and what can I do to resque my XP installation on hda ? The Fedora on hdb is already re-installed so that can be done again if needed. Of course I shouldn't have pulled the power to the disk right after power-on the machine, stupid stupid stupid I know...can the MBR have been so damaged that it cant be resetted or something ? But Fedora's installation saw all parbreastions on both disks correctly in Diskdruid....

Im lost here...any help much appreciated.
