Alan Connor ... snip ...

All this points up the need for a port of 4dos 4nt to Linux-Unix. Rex Conn and jpsoft will do it if there is a sufficient demand (it is commercial), and the demand for CLI tools for MsDOS-Windoze has fallen somewhat in recent years. It has a much smoother interface than bash for most of these things, but it does have a reliance on the text screen abilities of the PC.

For example, it can be configured to change to a directory, at any level, with only a partial identification. Thus "cd foo*" can result in changing to "foobar". If there is ambiguity a text window will pop up with the choices listed, and arrow keys and a list of recent directories, and allow instant return to any. pgUp alone produces a list of recent commands, and allows selection.

It can attach descriptions to any file or directory. No need for those long winded names with blanks or underscores in them. A full alias mechanism is built in.

Since it is quite familiar to MsDos users, such a port might even help contribute to the overthrow of Microsoft :-)
