Hm, "*we* did"... Does that mean there are some knowledgeable programmers in your company, but you, the newcomer, are afraid of asking them?
Get yourself a book about unix!!
Google the web for "shell tutorial". "unix tutorial".
Look in the directoriesusr-share-man-man1 andusr-share-man-man8, and look at the file names. Anyone that catches your imagination, e.g. uptime.1.gz, run the command "man uptime". Don't try to understand all details in the beginning, just look quickly here and there till you have a rough understanding of what *kind* of things are there.
Then pick a few and study them more carefully. Come back here to ask about things you don't understand. There will be lots of them, still!
When you ask,

and try to be as specific as possible in your questions. I don't understand in the least what your are trying to do, what level of knowledge you already have, or what you need!
