Can't write to external USB DVDRAM

I recently bought an LG 4163B DVD-RAM combo drive, and installed it in a Coolmax external USB 2.0 enclosure for portability. I've used DVD-RAM with Linux systems previously with no problem (they are just treated as removable SCSI drives), but this was always installing them as internal ATA devices. I've also successfully used the Coolmax enclosures with Linux for external hard drives. However, now with the USB setup I'm having trouble writing to DVD-RAM discs.

What is happening is that when the drive is plugged in and turned on, it is buttigned as device "-dev-sr2":

kernel: hub.c: new USB device 00:08.0-1, buttigned address 2 kernel: Manufacturer: Cypress Semiconductor kernel: Product: USB2.0 Storage Device kernel: SerialNumber: DEF108A9B96B kernel: scsi1 : SCSI emulation for USB Mbutt Storage devices kernel: Vendor: HL-DT-ST Model: DVDRAM GSA-4163B Rev: A101 kernel: Type: CD-ROM ANSI CSI revision: 02 kernel: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr2 at scsi1, channel 0, id 0,lun 0 kernel: sr2: scsi-1 drive

When usingdev-sr2 to mount the DVD-RAM discs, they are always read-only, even if the "rw" option is used. Also it is not possible use mkfs to put a filesystem on the disc. This is on a Mandrake 9.2 system, using a generic 2.4.28 kernel that has UDF write support enabled. (I am unable to use a 2.6 kernel as this computer has Disk Manager installed in the boot sector for Win98 dual-boot, and with DM the newer kernels cannot find the root parbreastion! I most recently tried this with 2.6.10. Unfortunately there are still a few Windoze apps that I need access to.)

Grunff and forward slashes in file names. Hint, hint. iso9660 won't accept these but hfs accepts forward slashes as a legal filename char. These are not iso9660 CDs. See below. and I...

Is there any way around this problem? It seems that thedev-sr? devices are always treated as read-only no matter what type of media is in the drive. So far searching with Google has not turned up a solution.
