I run Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 on my main machine. IIRC, all I did was stick in the first CD-ROM binary and accept the graphical installer (Anaconda?). I did all the usual stuff and selected "custom" installation when it came to selecting the applications. I removed the ftp and http servers and some other stuff I do not need, and added a few more, but pretty much took the defaults. I did my own disk parbreastioning because I have 4 SCSI hard drives and 2 EIDE hard drives and am very fussy as how I want them parbreastioned.

As far as CLI: I normally boot into run level 5 which runs X, GNOME, and metacity. But there is an icon on the panel that gives me an xterm whenever I want one (or more), and I can get it by right-clicking on a blank part of the desktop and selecting one from the ensuing menu -- though the latter is too much bother for me. I suppose I could have deleted the xterm software from the system by removing the xterm packages, and possibly that was an option at installation, but since I would never do that, I do not recall if that is even an option (though, I suppose, it is).

And when I do not want the distraction of the windowing system, Control-Alt-PF-1-6 gets me one of the virtual consoles. When running X, I do not even know how to turn off that ability.

If I almost never wanted the windowing stuff, I would just change the default run state from 5 to 3 in theetc-inittab and run startx when I wanted to, but I normally do run at run state 5, so that is what my inittab is set for. The only other main distro I know of with "enterprise" in the name is by SuSE, but since I have never run that, I leave it to others to comment on that.
