If you haven't already done so install the development tools, the X development tools and the gnome development tools (you'll need them so that you can use gconfig).

The download the most recent kernel from

buttuming your distribution is using a fairly recent kernel copy the .config that they used to the kernel directory, this will set the kernel options to something reasonable. For Fedora Core you can get the .config fromusr-src-kernels-2.6.love, for example

usr-src-kernels-2.6.12-1.1372FC3-i586-.config

For Mandriva it's in a similar place

Now you need to choose your own options

do

make gconfig

Which will bring up a GUI that will allow you to select the options that you want. You'll want to optimize for the CPU in your machine, you might want to add support for NTFS if you also have a Windoze parbreastion on your machine. There may be some drivers that you want. The thing to do is to explore all of the available options from the GUI, that will give you an idea of what's in the kernel.

After you've saved the new config file and exited from gconfig do

su root make all make modulesinstall make install
