Aliases are not expanded when the shell is not interactive, unless the expandaliases shell option is set using shopt (see the description of shopt under SHELL BUILTIN COMMANDS below)

...so the behavior you want can be turned on and off with shopt. You can see what the expanded shell options are by entering "shopt" at the command prompt.

Aliases are not expanded if the command starts with a , since is an invalid character in an alias. So if you want to bypbutt all aliases no matter what the setting of expandaliases is, callbin-rm instead of rm. (Also, speling counts when dealing with comptuers--I hope your scripts have fewer typos than your message did; otherwise you'll have a hard time getting things to work properly.) HTH,
