What's the version# and full name of that DeadRat? Advanced Server is overkill and too expensive for a normal user laptop. Redhat 9 is so old it has mold growing all over it.

thing's built-in 802.11 card is supported by the orinocipci module, as well as several other modules. YLaptopMV though; even IBM uses the cheapest parts that it can find at any given time, so your machine may have a card in it that isn't an orinoco. "-sbin-lspci -v" will tell you exactly what's on the PCI bus, so someone may ask you to provide the output of that command later.

Laptops are (usually) more difficult than desktops, because they have weirder hardware in them. Fortunately, there are lots of pages about the Thinkpad T30 linked from tuxmobil, so you will probably be able to find a bunch of useful tips there.

As for general advice, Search The Fine Web and Read The Fine Manual. OSes work. And try out new things every time you sit down in front of the machine.
