GUI and Rapid Application Development
Colleagues, file from windows to linux - I am eager to know what platform, from your experience, was faster in developing-deploying applications quickly. I come from a Windows background but most...

Er. 196.0.0.0 isn't in the private IP space. In general, you should use the 192.168.0.0 or 10.0.0.0 spaces for your private networks, as this cuts down on Stupid Problems. However, what you want to do should be no problem. Can both machines ping each other? You should be able to enter "ping 196.254.204.196" from the Linux box and get echo-response packets from the 'Doze machine.

following words to the mbuttes incomp.os.linux.misc...: Hmmm... Sounds peculiarly familiar... :- Have you made any changes to your X server...

If you don't get that, something's wrong, and you should post the full ouput of "ifconfig" on the Linux box and "IPCONFIGALL" on the 'Doze machine.

Say something if the part in above is wrong. OK, so it's probably not a hardware problem. Try the ping command above, post outputs from ifconfig and IPCONFIG if it doesn't work. Remember that you need to set a default route with "route add default gw X.Y.Z.W" on the Linux machine if the Linux machine has a static IP and you need the Linux machine to be able to access machines outside the LAN. You also need to setetc-resolv.conf up properly if the Linux machine has a static IP. (DHCP sets up routing and DNS automagically.)
