Experience? I can find my way around practically any distro since I know how to use locate, man, grep -r, and Google, but sometimes it's nice to know that the file you need to change for BlueHat 9.6 is inetc-sysconfig-barf-bungle-something.conf . Saves time and all that.

That's not quite the same, since the kernel will always be whatever you started with even though userspace could change dramatically. Running multiple X sessions from multiple chrooted environments might get messy and-or confusing, to say nothing of trying to modprobe things.
