Ubuntu Linux review from a Mandrake 10.1 user
I have been using Mandrake since version 8, before that I was a Windows only guy for many years. I had tried Linux back at Red Hat...

Apart from the kernel, a distribution is just a collection of libraries, binaries and data, so you can run them all seamlessly if you set it up correctly. If you share the needed bits, it's totally transparent. It's not a standalone environment, so you can't run duplicate copies of daemons in the chroot without additional configuration, but from a normal user's point of view, it's mostly identical to the host system.

Parbreastion trashed, reiserfsck no help
Hi, My parbreastion trashed itself and I don't know what to do. This is what happened: I was copying data from the parbreastion over Samba while a few other streams were going on on...

If you want to experiment with the administration side of a distribution, a chroot won't be sufficient, but if you just want touseone, e.g. for its toolchain, it's ideal.

If you use a distribution like Debian, you can cdebootstrap a chroot in a few minutes.

$ mount grep sargedev-mapper-hdavg-sargechroot onsrv-chroot-sarge type ext3 (rw)dev-pts onsrv-chroot-sarge-dev-pts type none (rw,bind) tmpfs onsrv-chroot-sarge-dev-shm type tmpfs (rw) proc onsrv-chroot-sarge-proc type proc (rw)dev-mapper-hdavg-home onsrv-chroot-sarge-home type ext3 (rw,quota,userxattr)tmp onsrv-chroot-sarge-tmp type none (rw,bind)etc-pbuttwd onsrv-chroot-sarge-etc-pbuttwd type none (ro,bind)etc-shadow onsrv-chroot-sarge-etc-shadow type none (ro,bind)etc-group onsrv-chroot-sarge-etc-group type none (ro,bind)etc-resolv.conf onsrv-chroot-sarge-etc-resolv.conf type none (ro,bind)

There are also tools available to make chroot usage easy

$ schroot -i -c sarge Name: sarge Description: Debian sarge (stable) Location:srv-chroot-sarge Groups: sbuild Root Groups: Aliases: stable

$ catetc-debianversion testing-unstable $ schroot -c sarge catetc-debianversion sarge chroot Running command: Òcatetc-debianversionÓ 3.1

$ schroot -c sarge -u root --bin-uname -a Pbuttword: sarge chroot (rleigh¨root) Running command: g-bin-uname -ah Linux hardknott 2.6.12 #1 Sun Jun 19 01:35:55 BST 2005 ppc GNU-Linux

This setup allows any authorised user to run any command or shell in the chroot, including X applications.
