Only thing I can guess is that it was compiled for a different setup, though I can't think what that might have been. After all, name resolution is a normal C call that expects (in most versions I've ever dealt with) that you need to grab name server data out ofetc-resolv.conf (even if you decide to bypbuttetc-host.conf oretc-nsswitch.conf and the DNS query tools do).

Yeah, but that's an old version - there was a problem back then, but I can't remember what it was. Looking at an old directory listing from ftp.redhat.com but I can't remember why (it could have been an 'enhancement' rather than a was libc5.
