Snip...

Surprised me, too, but it was the first hit suitable for my needs. :)

Yeah, but for a floppy boot setup like Toms, it's perfect: small, fast, and static (no object library conflicts), and from a reputable site.

Debian.. aptget issue. probably simple solution
Trying to run apt-get update and then an upgrade.. getting the below results. From the looks of it the system...

The downside: I'm certain the version of zlib used is ancient, so obviously vulnerable to various zlib cracks. It's even more highwire acts when you're running as root (as Toms does, of course) and using it.

The upside of Toms in this regard is it doesn't enable any inbound services in its default configuration. You really have to go outta your way to start even telnetd listening, IMO. So, unless somebody's gone WAY outta their way to craft a Toms-specific exploit, zlib (etc.) isn't much worry for me.

AIM on Debian
I have the latest stable Debian installed, 2.4.27-2-386. Mozilla 1.7.8. Attempting to install AIM. Following the instructions for AIM 1.5.286 for Debian...

As always, be careful what sites you reach, and the downloads you do. :)

I agree it shouldn't make a difference at the DNS level between any of this lynx coding over time. Especially when eth0 onetc-hosts is OK for both. I think the only reasonable way to fix that is to build-debug from source.

If I had time, I might try to do a static build from the latest lyxn source for a common Intel code base (like 486), but it's definitely backburner.

In the Usenet newsgroup comp.os.linux.misc, in article i know about two years ago, their DNS was returning that 'sunsite.unc.edu' was a CNAME, and pointing to metalab.unc.edu. Now, doing a DNS...

I've never liked cookies and to this day disable them (and java-javascript) in all browsers unless using a known trusted site that must have them (like merchants). So if the Red Hat errata involved turning on cookies, it wasn't anything but a nuisance for me with lynx. :)

It's inconvenient at times, but I prefer to err on the side of caution with all the M$-induced net pestilence infesting the online world today.

Lots of things between my builds went KABLOOWIE about that time. :)

I used to laugh at the microsmurfs going through DLL hell. No more. :)

I defer to Weinberg's 1st Law of Computer Programming:

Any program that works is better than any program that doesn't.
