I've had a similar but not identical problem. I have a rather new HP pavilion a720n with a combo dvd writer cd writer, and a separate Cd-rom reader. The combo unit can burn DVD's and CD's perfectly well, but it can't read them back in. whenever I mount CD's (for example) on the combo unit, all files are present and show appropriate length, but many are corrupted when copied back onto the hard disk. If I unmount and then remount the same CD (on the combo DVD CD writer unit) the same thing happens again, but with a DIFFERENT set of files corrupted. The files are mostly small, 10-200 kb size - documents and jpg's. Text files can be corrupted (when read back onto the hard disk), and jpg's are corrupted so only part of the picture displays properly. The SAME CD's are all read back perfectly well on the other drive (the cd-rom reader unit) and both drives work perfectly well under windows XP (the system is dual boot, with XP and debian unstable).

Upgrading GLIBC, recompiling progs ok, but cant find GLIBC
recently downloaded GLIBC 2.3.2 and compiled it (I installed in usr-local-... so as to keep the old GLIBC 2.2.5 in tact.) Now when I compile programs that were working before so as to link...

I'm sorry I have no solution and am not sure we are experiencing the same problem, but from your description it seemed similar enough. I use 2.6.11 kernel and don't use ide-scsi emulation, I use the ide-cd module. I don't have another computer or another combo dvd cd writer unit to cross-test, so I don't really know if my unit is just broken or if it is a true software issue. Since the drive works perfectly well (the combo unit) for both burning and reading cd's and DVD's under XP, I suspect it is a linux driver or other software issue.

Can your "corrupted" DVD's be read in normally under XP? My "corrupted" cd's CAN be read in normally under XP, they are only corrupted when mounted and read back onto the hard disk under linux. (ie my linux box can write DVD's and CD's perfectly well on the combo dvd-cd writer unit, just can't read them back in on the same unit).
