DVDRW reformatting problemPlease comment on the ippimail project Charity fundraising I hope you guys don't mind me posting this here. You are the kind of people we need feedback... On Sat, 07 Jan 2006 00:08:31 +0000, Augustus SFX van Dusen
This is the key phrase. Unlike CD-RW media, DVD-RW only needs to be formatted once. Repeated reformatting is not recommended, as it will shorten the usable life of the disk, and can, in some cases, destroy the disk completely. In rare cases, due to some form of improper burn, it may be necessary to reformat, which is why there is a -force option, but this is the exception to the rule. If you want to re-use the disk, (burn new data) simply do so. Depending on which app you use to do the burning, you will get some form of message that the disk contains data, and will be asked if you want to overwrite it. Answer yes, and the rewrite will occur.
The warnings are there to prevent you from damaging your disks, through improper use. Unlike Windows warnings, Linux warnings actually contain useful messages. Heed them. You may have already damaged the disk, with repeated reformatting. Try rewriting without trying to reformat, yet again. It should work, if not damaged, as described above. -- imotgm "Lost? Lost?
