Ah, you've read the "Gentoo is for Ricers" site :-). There's considerable truth to it... Right. I thought "Arch" was known for being a source code management system that was an alternative to CVS...

Exotic as in compiling PHP without mysql support? In fact PHP is one of the best examples. To compile PHP with the standard flags requires about 15 more packages than I need to enable services I don't use and possible open the system for attack: sql, xml, image manipulation, true type font, etc are just some of the things I often leave out when not needed. Any time I build a server I build it to do what is needed and nothing more. Less to maintain that way and less ways in. Using any other distro I am downloading from php.net and compiling by hand. Using Gentoo I tell it what I want and let it do the work.

Custom compilation is very useful. With other systems you have a drive full of crap you never use. I make it a habbit to check what gets installed and configure out that which I don't need. I end up with a system built for ME, not some non-existant Joe that needs everything.

You can count how many times you have customized your system on one hand...I can count how many times I haven't with no hands.
