i'd say it comes down to this ... if you could go out and buy insert software package ... adobe photoshop, dvd creator this or that, civilization iii (or insert game), blah blah blah and install it on linux out of the box and have it work then linux would take over the world. because that's why nobody uses linux on a desktop, because they can't run the software they want-need for whatever purpose they bought the computer for in the first place. sample purposes include ... because they want to talk to their grandkids, because they want to play games, because they want their kid to do better in school, because the smiths have one and they feel like a dumbbutt because they don't, because they want-need to bring some of their office work home, etc. even piles of devote linux users only use it for certain things, you have to basically be political about it to completely toast windows on your machine, most linux users dual boot if it's their personal desktop, or run vmware. why ? because of commercial software they want to run. period.
