The problems never seem to be Linux, but with third party software. That has nothing to do with the quality of the OS, and you know it. Now, it certainly affects whether people will use the OS, but that's not the same thing.

Asolutely wrong. Modularization is one of the key things that makes Linux superior -- it provides choice. More importantly from a technical standpoint it will mean that not everyone is using the exact same software sets, because they have choice, so any vulnerabilities in software are less likely to be universal. The universality of windows vulnerabilities -- every machine (patched vs unpatched aside) has the same vulnerabilities.

Further, integration of user apps into the OS is what has made Windows the poo mess it is. Lack of seperation between kernel level code and user level code, software being installed in with the OS files -- sometimes even overwriting the OS files with new ones -- has made the OS a nightmare.

Red Hat didn't want to get sued by MS, which given their legal practices would have been a distinct possibility.

On Sat, 28 May 2005 07:44:02 -0700, lqualig The point being made here is slightly different, IMO. Computers (at least in...

Wrong again. This is the entire point of open source. Someone has a problem that needs a solution, so they make it themselves, and make it available to others. This was more or less why Linus wrote Linux originally (except it wasn't so much to solve a practical problem as one of curiosity, at the time).

Really? I have no problem recompiling my kernel. Takes about 30 minutes, starting from scratch. And thats only because it takes so long for the modules to compile. The actual time of me doing something is less than ten minutes.

Then don't use Open Source. That is the whole point of open source is that we can add functionality to our own systems, and share it with everyone. That is how open source works. You don't like it, then don't use it.

Windows supports other filesystems? Since when?

And besides I compile from source roughly half of all software i install (the other half being .tgz packages). Again, this is OPEN SOURCE software. You're given the source code for a reason. And its not like its hard to compile and install, you just have to learn:

.-configure make make install

If it ever differs from that, it will say so in the documentation.

Yeah, you should have gotten an NVidia card, they have decent linux support (though i've had drivers fail to work for no discernible reason (meaning, I in my limited sysadmin skills could not tell for the life of me what was wrong), and it was nothing a careful kernel recompile couldn't fix).

Again, use Nvidia. Problem solved.

Depends on the distro and your configuration. Any distro can be configured to plug and play, automounting removable devices (buttuming hardware will do it). Some do it out of the box (FC3 comes to mind as i've used it and know for a fact it handled all of my peripherals fine, however that only amounted to a flash drive and a usb floppy drive).

And again you're missing the whole point of Linux and open source. Tight integration is a bad thing. It eliminates choice and freedom. Operating systems should implement mechanisms ONLY. Policy should be left to sysadmins and users. I don't want my OS doing things i don't specifically tell it to do. And in Linux it doesn't. If you want your OS to be independent of your instructions, stick with windows.

You're completely wrong. As i said, Linux can be set up to do plug and play in GNOME or KDE. The mechanisms are all provided. You have to set policy. And that is the way it should be. If you want the OS to hols your hand then go use something else.

Wrong. Users should know everything about how the OS works, about how the programs they use interface. This way, they can actually use the system competently, and troubleshoot their problems. Computers should NOT be black boxes.

Then you're incompetent. In a few months i've learned enough of how my system works to heavily automate it to do exactly what i'd like. For for icons. So i have 4 sets of desktop icons, and i set up fluxbox so at the press of a key I can cycle through all four sets--one for Games, one for Work, one for General Use, and one with no icons. Each set of icons is specifically setup to be the most efficient for my use. Try doing anything remotely like that in windows.

Not a linux problem. Thats a problem with your digital camera. Don't like it? Don't use linux, you'll save your time, and more importantly ours.

I'm a linux user, linux will not conquer windows because the general mbuttes are to lazy to learn how to use a computer all they want is some thing they can use with...

Never had the problem. I manually configure cups using a web browser. Takes five minutes. ONly problem i have is OO 2.0 BETA doesn't print any complicated file formats, other than pdf. No problem, since i distribute everything as pdf anyway. Quirky bug though. 1.1.4 works fine though.

Considering Linux You had better Look at WhoWhat Is Supporting it. 4160
For the record, InfoWorld gave the Linux community an award for "Best Support in the industry". That was...

You're a retard.

Then don't. And leave us alone while you're at it.

Wrong. You seem to think that MS sets the standard we have to follow. Not gonna happen. Linux and OSS has been made to be interoperable, modular and interchangeable. This leaves us with the ability to choose. And if you don't like it, too bad. Start your own OS. Call it 'Designed like windows while trying not to be poo'. We'll stick with our design.
