But it doesn't matter: the older Radeon cards (everything from the 9250 down) are fully supported by the open source drivers. You're not missing out on any features by not using the ATI drivers. Plus you don't have the hbuttle of making a proprietary driver work with each new kernel release. There will always be colour differences between monitors as shipped from the factory. That's just a fact of life. However, you can usually use gamma settings to compensate for that. The "Gamma" setting is mentioned briefly in the manpage for XF86Config (in the "Monitor" section). There's no mention of *how* to obtain the right gamma settings, though. The only people I know who are concerned about such things are graphics professionals with (expensive) colour calibration sensors they use in that process. You might be stuck with just playing around with the 'xgamma' program until you get something you like. (You may have to repeat the process periodically. I'm told that monitors' colour reproduction changes with age. Professionals will recalibrate every six months or so.) Point is "gamma" or "xgamma" or "gamma correction" are the key words you need when searching for info (be it man pages or Google).
