GRUB booting CD _or_ harddisk
I can make a bootable CD using GRUB + El Torito no-emulation mode. It's almost completely explained in the GRUB manual...

I had posted this in the hardware NG, but since discovering that I could dig part of the way out of the hole with Knoppix, decided this would be a better place to post. It may still be hardware related, but at this point I'm just not recovering my system. W. Watson

How to minimize system memory for a computational grid of linux servers
I have an application that is running on a total of 7 linux (fedora 3) servers with 2gig of ram each. The process will be run for seven days at a time...

Well, I decided to boot from my Knoppix CD and that worked. The machine stayed up for 30 minutes while I was in Knoppix. I could see that my HDs looked in tact. I then tried to reboot without the CD and got the same results. That is, after it looked like I was on my way to a clean boot, it died suddenly exercising the login (text or graphic).

I found that I could power up without messing with the power cords and power outlets by powering down the PC and waiting for the red LED to go off completely.

I noticed that during boot up that I was getting the message "unclean shut down, repair by pressing Y in 5 sec". I went through that exercise about 3-4 times and each time it all failed at the login.

This is all happening in RHL 9. I have a dual boot linux system: regular linux and realtime linux. It was all working fine until this morning. It died while bringing down rtlinux with a reboot. The attempts above were all for the linux boot. I did try to boot into rt linux, but got a kernel panic, and abandonded that.
