Hmm. ISTR seeing reports of some problems with 2.6.8 (or was that 2.6.9?) and CD-burning, and there might be some weird side cases with some chipsets that were fixed in the latest kernels. It might be worthwhile to try 2.6.10 and see if the problem goes away.

This should also be OK, although for some reason my nForce IDE chipset uses UDMA-4 by default on my disks. It might be worthwhile to try forcing it to UDMA-4 with "hdparm -X udma4dev-hda", or it might not. I'd try the 2.6.10 and SMART paths first though.

The package is actually called "smartmontools". My bad. It's almost certainly on your distro CDs. If it isn't, sourceforge.net has it. HTH, let us know how you get on.
