Changing hard drives and GRUB
I wish to replace my 7200rpm EIDE drives with 10,000rpm SCSI ones (my other 4 drives are already 10,000rpm SCSI drives). Now...

Hello,

We have a production Redhat Enterprise Linux 4 server that is used as a: 1. File Server (Samba) 2. Print Server (Cups-PDF) 3. Database Server (MySQL)

In addition we have SSH set up to allow us to remotely log in. Please note that Samba and Cups are set to work under a specific account and group both named 'foobar' (say). All users who read-write files from this server have to be part of the 'foobar' group.

Last night we had the following happen: 1. Samba started printing PANIC messages tovar-log-messages and dropped all connections. Applications-Users reading-writing to this file server could not connect to it. They could ping it, but not mount the file system. A snippet is shown below. 2. The Cups-PDF network printer stopped accepting print jobs. Applications-Users printing to this server were not able to.

Things that stayed up: 1. SSH : We were able to log into this server, locally and remotely with at least three other accounts, including the root account. 2. MySQL : The database server continued to function as if nothing had happened.

We reckoned that the 'foobar' account had expired. Hence we logged in using another account and tried to 'su' to this account:

$ su - foobar

This gave us the error message 'Failed to set uid : Resource temporarily unavailable'.

The machine was then re-booted. This fixed all problems.

Any ideas on what could have caused this to occur would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much in advance.
