Fedora Core 4 Sucks

I tried Fedora Core 2 and even there, my sound did not work. It was the first drstribution I used that had a real 2;6 kernel in it. The same card had worked in Red Hat Linux distributions from 5.0 all the way to 9 (inclusive) and worked with Windows XP Home as well.

I then put CentOS 4.2 on that machine (I run Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 on my main machine), and the sound still did not work. After a lot of trouble, I just replaced the ISA Soundblaster soundboard with a very similar PCI Soundblaster soundboard (cost about $20 new), and it all worked just fine.

I do not like OpenOffice much, but that may be due to the fact that I never took the trouble to learn it. I mostly use abiword for word processing, and Applix 5.0 for word processing, spreadsheets. I do not know if Applix is around anymore, and it is not free anyway.

I know nothing about that, but I have little trouble compiling stuff I write myself (in C++) using Embedded SQL for IBM's DB2 dbms, which should be complicated enough. When some packages do not compile, it is usually very early in the process where one does .-configure, and that step does not work because of wrong buttumptions in the configure script. I usually just give up with those.

While CentOS 4.2 is a good distribution, it too uses a 2.6 kernel, so your sound still is unlikely to work if you have an ISA sound board.

The other thing that would not work for me is to use the Fedora Core 2 (now CentOS) machine as a printer server. The machine with the printer on it would print OK, but the other machine would not do it. I could not get it to work with Fedora Core 2. It did work with Red Hat Linux 6.2 up to and including RHL 9, so I buttume there was no hardware problem. It does work with CentOS 4.2.

But if you do not wish to be on the bleeding edge, I do recommend RHEL4 or CentOS 4.2. You could also consider SuSE Enterprise (I forget the exact name; I never used SuSE).

Context switching problem
Right now my machine is essentially idle, and I get (first line deleted): $ vmstat 5 procs memory swap io system cpu r b swpd free buff cache...
