Fedora Core 5 freezes on startup

I have a pc a few years old that I run Fedora Core 5 on. I bought a new AGP NVIDIA GeForce 5500 card for it. I tried to install it and had

some problems. I could not get the drivers to work b-c I didn't have the kernel sources installed. So I pulled out the installation CDs to see if they would help. The only option the install CDs gave me was to

do an upgrade so I did that. It seemed to work fine. I tried to reboot and now fedora freezes after the Start service haldaemon. I've tried starting in interactive mode and stop some services. I tried stopping my network card. I even tried stopping all of the services. It still freezes after the haldaemon.

I've tried it with the video card and without the video card. I can get it to a login prompt with the video card in but it wont accept any user names. If I type 'root' and hit enter it never asks for a pbuttword and just prompts for a username again.

Does anybody have any ideas? I have a good bit of data on this computer and I'd really like to recover it.
