Interesting; I've never seen... On Linux, there are several web-scripting languages like PHP, Perl, JSP, Python etc that could replace ASP. Replacing VB's dlls is possible by using CGI (code in Perl) or using bean-servlets in Java. Replacement of IIS is Apache. I heard about "mono" that can allow .NET components to run under non-MS platforms way as Windows to host file-servers, web-servers and ftp-servers. It is really simple to build and use. You dont need any component but a Linux distribution - cost-free (Fedora, OpenSuSE, Debian etc) or paid-for (SuSE enterprise, RHEL etc). Distrowatch.com has a list of several Linux distributions. Ubuntu might be on top of the list. It is a desktop and server OS, but personally I would start with OpenSuSE or Fedora. Take advise from other Linux users too. When it comes to using Server.CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject"), you could use Perl to do similar stuffs and a lot more (e.g. if (! -e $filename) { print "$filename not present-n"; } or similar things). PHP, Python, JSP etc. have their equivalent statements. PHP, in my opinion, is the easier to learn and replace. I find JSP-Java combination most promising, though. Again, its just my perception. Others may have different favorites. ASP-VB is an easy combination to learn for people that have been inclined to Microsoft products. However, moving out ot Perl-PHP etc is not difficult. In fact, its fun. Only piece of advise - learn the concepts of the scripting language and its underlying OS; will help you code better.
