Filesystem problems with progeny RH 9 kernel upgradeFolks, We have some servers till being held at RedHat 9 (and we are getting close to upgrade to RHEL 4). We have been using progeny service to get security updates and it has worked out fairly well. Recently, in late March, we upgraded to 2.4.20-31.9.progeny.7smp a few weeks later we saw a server start reporting file system and SCSI errors. It was an older system, we swapped out the disk. About a week later another system started reporting similar errors, and we thought 'what a coincidence!". Now in the second case the disk was newer and we ran a bunch of diagnostics on it and it all seemed good. Tried to put it back in the machine again as a backup disk -- and it still seemed to fail a few hours later. problems starting x i've got ubuntu hoary on an IBM thinkpad. since upgrading to hoary i've encountered a few problems. no deal... Real recently we saw the same errors on a production server and the light bulb went off -- maybe it is the kernel? We rebooted back to the prior version, ran fsck on all filesystems just to make sure we were good -- and now hope not to see the problem again! Has anyone else still running RedHat 9 been experiencing file system problems after the recent progeny upgrad?. Our equipment was dell poweredge servers, Adaptec and LSI Logic SCSI controllers, and both Seagate and Fujitsu disks - also, SMP systems. -- John John Murtari Software Workshop Inc.
