Firefox 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.32 installation nightmareI'm a newbie to linux. My system is Debian-GNU (stable) ver. 2.4.27-2-386 All I wanted was Firefox 1.5 running, becouse of some extensions and the automatic update function. But I got some problems. I know the Firefox 1.5 is yet 'unstable', but I guess there are a lot of you guys having this version on their system. First I tried to install this Firefox 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.3-2 .. .deb. I got some dependecy errors, and I was still full of energy (eager to get Firefox running..) so I installed all the packages which where required. There where some dependency conflicts as well, but I tried to ignore them since it looked like I just needed to install all Packages required by Firefox and then it would be allright. I mean they depended on each other, and I just didn't install them in the right order. But enough chat, here is some output: The following packages have unmet dependencies: installable installable installed libc6-dev: Depends: libc6 (= 2.3.2.ds1-22sarge3) but 2.3.6-7 is installed libgcc1: Depends: gcc-4.1-base (= 4.1.0-4) but it is not installable installed installed is installed libstdc++6: Depends: gcc-4.1-base (= 4.1.0-4) but it is not installable installable libxinerama1: Depends: x11-common but it is not installable locales: Depends: glibc-2.3.2.ds1-22sarge3 There are even packages which "are not installable". That sounds very bad to me.. I tried apt-get -f install or dist-upgrade (I'm not so familiar with all this console hacking..) Reading Package Lists... Done Building Dependency Tree... Done Correcting dependencies... Done Calculating Upgrade... Done The following packages will be REMOVED: abiword-common abiword-gnome akode amor apache2 apache2-common apach .......... ........................... xprint-common xprt-xprintorg xscreensaver xscreensaver-gl xserver-xfree86 yelp zenity The following packages will be upgraded: libnspr4 libnss3 libtiff-tools libtiff4 WARNING: The following essential packages will be removed This should NOT be done unless you know exactly what you are doing! apt libgcc1 (due to apt) libstdc++5 (due to apt) dpkg dselect (due to dpkg) sysvinit initscripts (due to sysvinit) 4 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 466 to remove and 0 not upgraded. 2 not fully installed or removed. If I would continue with apt-get -f install, I would basicly do an almost complete re-install. And I don't wan't that. There must be a better way out of that mess. Or??
