Firewall security: Problems with simple Samba file share 3574I think it's good that you're so careful. I do not claim that my hardware-firewall-only approach is advisable. It's just that, for me, it's all I need. This is my home network. There is nothing to compromise. I have some important files, but they're on a different machine, and I'm confident that they cannot be accessed from outside my network, so that's all I care about. I'm not a masochistic "armchair network administrator" who is going to spend days securing a system when there is no need, and I don't even have a desire to learn. Now if I was setting this machine up for an employer, I would certainly be as careful as possible. If you're wondering how many people are careful like you are... I would say that people with a network security background are going to tend to set up their machines like you do just because (1) they know how and (2) they tend to take security more seriously, even when there isn't a real need. But, amongst people like myself who are not Linux experts nor network security gurus, I think we're going to tend to just set up basic security and be satisfied with that.
