Grunff type.

Because you did not have the hfs module loaded.

Handling a CD from a MacOS client with "-"s imbeded *in* the filenames I'm wondering the OPs best bet isn't to find a MacOS 9 host, mount the...

not

I am more and more convinced that the CDs are not iso9660, because: a) "-" is not a valid iso9660 filename char and I'm unaware of any software that would actually burn an iso9660 CD with such filenames b) they were burned on a Mac and hfs is the standard Mac CD fs format c) they were burned by Mac graphics people and most likely they never even tried (or thought) to burn iso9660 CDs or hybrids (if they are even available on Macs) d) your symptoms are uncannily similar to Mac CD problems we had at school

My memory of this Mac CD problem is 6-7 years old, so it is rusty. We have a biology teacher that loves her Mac laptop -- uses it at work and home. School uses PCs with Win98.

Students in lab were the ones that actually found the solution. I was too busy to deal with it myself, so I gave it to the Linux kids to "fix". The more I think on it, the less convinced I am that they used cdfs. Too involved for them to not lose patience with it. So they must have used ...

I'm pretty sure they used hfsutils to access the CDs that were burned on her Mac (whick was in for repairs-upgrade IIRC). Don't know if back then the CDs were hfs or hfs+ (the latter I think would have caused problems).

Since I don't recall you mentioning what distro you are using, I will point you to pbone to locate an rpm -- for debian go to ??? Just type in "hfsutils" in the search box (no qoutes).

I think it comes with command line tools that would allow you to script copying the files to your hard disk. Haven't read all the docs and don't know for sure how it will handle "-" in filenames.

The presence of hfsutils on distro CDs is rather spotty judging from what pbone turned up. Eg., available on RH7.x PowerTools, not available on RH8 or RH9 or FC1. Reappeared on FC2 and FC3. Similar spottiness on MDK and Suse afaict.

I think the hfs filesystem module included with Linux is rudimentary at best and I doubt it will handle the "-" in file names. If so, great:)

If not, you may have to use cdfs to generate the appropriate filesystem metadata "on the fly" as you access the CDs. Not sure just how you will use it to copy the files to your hard disk.

In any case, I don't think you will get anywhere with trying iso9660 options or tricks -- it's not an iso9660 CD (IMO) and I doubt it's a hybrid CD.

With 500+ CDs to access and copy from, you really need a way to mount the CDs and "fix" the filename problem transparently -- or at least with as little fiddling as possible.

good luck, prg email above disabled
