GRUB problem: Booting Linux from USB Disk 2345
Reinstalling the O-S, which included doing the parbreastioning steps all over again, but this time specifying MBR of the USB disk on which to install GRUB stage1, worked. Now the...
Grub, how to save last OS which was started
Hello, below is the full config file. i have a debian-like distri called kanotix. with...

You are both right. It should have been installed on MBR, and thinking about it, I was surprised to see even just the "GRUB" once you guys set me straight.

Ok... so here is what I did that got me further, but not all the way:

I did as Bill suggested, and it got grub on the MBR. However, and Im not an expert on GRUB, on that same MBR, there seems embedded information including a menu.lst table I think. The reason I say this is because the menu.lst contents that I have on theboot filesystem has different. I need to clear this out and tell stage1 to look for the menu.lst on the filesystem (and not use the one in the MBR).

In other words, I can now boot to stage2, but the menu.lst is not the one I expect. So I press enter and get to a grub shell. From there I dynamically make the adjustments and the boot process starts (uncompressing of the kernel and initrd images). But then it PANIC's because the initrd image says it cannot certain virtual filesystems.

On Thu, 10 Aug 2006 12:01:30 -0700, Noelle You probably could've fixed the grub loader only, without reinstalling the OS. That's okay, (water under the bridge), you're almost up and running now. I also agree...

Ohhhhhhhhhhh! I think I might know what's happening (a thought that just came to me).

Initially I installed GRUB on the first sector of theboot parbreastion. And although I also installed GRUB now on the MBR, that old information must still be there.

I will reinstall-reformat from scratch and let you know. This time I will specify the MBR of the disk on which I am booting.

I will let you know.

Regards, Noelle Milton
