GRUB question 2255

I tried what Linux Utilisateur suggested and it doesn't seem to work on my machine. I don't have a DOS CD as he does. I tried various ways of formattingdev-hda1, such as mkfs.vfat, mkfs.msdos from Linux and format-s c: from the FREEDOS installation diskette. In each case, I executed sys a: c: from the FREEDOS diskette afterwards. I also tried modifyingboot-grub-menu.lst as he indicated. Also, since sys a: c: printed out (among other things): FAT starts at 4507776+1 Root directory starts at sector PREVIOUS+197x2 Boot sector kernel set to KERNEL SYS Boot sector load segment set to 60:0h

Noticing the 60:0h, I also tried changing the line chainloader+1 to chainloader+60 inboot-grub-menu.lst, even though that is ridiculous, and it had no discernible effect: no matter what I do, grub brings up the menu and when I select DOS the menu comes back up. So, I know that nothing is working, but I don't know why nothing is working.

Is there some way to get grub to give me some error messages and put them in a file somewhere so I can have some idea what the problem is with booting FREEDOS when DOS is selected from the menu? -- Ignorantly, * Disclaimer: I am a guest and *not* a member of the MIT CSAIL.
