Getting started with old laptop 1716Dances With Crows Either 128 or 256, can't remember off hand. Enough for win2k, but just barely.
Don't seem to have my model # listed, although there are ones which seem to be quite close. Getting started with old laptop 1717 It's much easier to support someone using Linux then Windows. You can access their system remotely using SSH and...
XUbuntu went on just fine, and seems to work very well. About 2x as fast as the Win2K that was one there before...
That being different from now how? At least with linux most of the problems should be "how do I...", not "mom DL'd another virus", or "windows is broken", or "what does bane error mean", or any of the other various other crisis I get called about these days.
OpenOffice should be fine. Dad worked in an office for years, and going from word to openoffice isn't exactly hard (only major difference I noticed was I didn't need to save every 20 seconds as open simply doesn't crash). I can see them using the spreadsheet function as well.
The card (a network everywhere card) actually seems to work better with linux. I remember constant battles trying to get it working before, now it actually is plug-and-play, not plug-and-swear-and-fight-and-swear-and-plead-and-cry-and-swear-and-play
Seems to work OK, although I've only tried it out on our work network, which is fairly robust, user-friendly, and as close to idiot-proof as you can get. Thanx for the help. Bryan
