Getting started with old laptopwell as some "customized" distros (using KDE) that came with our equipment. To say I'm impressed is an understatement, and I'm now looking to get linux onto an old laptop of mine. I'm certain the laptop will run linux - it runs several live-CD's quite well (Dyne:Bolic, Knoppix) although not all video resolutions the laptop can do is available through linux. The laptop itself is ~5 years old, Compaq precario, with a celeron 800MHz processor. What I am wondering is what distribution(s) would be good for this system? I've been looking around, and many of the distro's I see seem to be intended for newer, more powerful computers. Seeing as this is an older computer I was hoping someone could recommend a distro with a desktop environment a little less processor hungry. In terms of intended use: word processing, some minimal image manipulation, and basic internet browsing. If it works well I'm planning on giving it to my parents so that they have a cheap laptop to drag around on their trips. I guess the two biggest hurdles is going to be support for the PCMCIA wireless and 10-100 network cards. Thanx in advance for any info you can provide.
