Have you tried restarting X using Ctrl-Alt-Backspace ?

Pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1 will get you to the first virtual console (text mode). The other five (generally) can be accessed via Ctrl-Alt-F2 to Ctrl-Alt-F6. From one of those you can log in as root and bring down X or even restart the machine if that is your wont.

I believe thats RH 7 already used the standard run levels that they use in more current versions. If this is the case, then you are booting into run level 5 - you could check that by looking atetc-inittab for a line that resembles:

id:5:initdefault:

There is *always* a way to do something in text mode - see above for Ctrl-Alt-Fn

As root, edit the default line inetc-inittab (see above). It should currently have 5 in the second field, changing that to 3 would bring you up into full networking without X.

If your current entry has 3 in the second field, try 2 but I don't think that this will be the case. You may even get lucky and find that RH left the comments in inittab to tell you what each run level means.

Change the default run level as described above. When you restart the machine, you will go to full multiuser with network but without X.
