GnuCash import problems

I'm using GnuCash 1.8.9 on FedoraCore 3. This I'm sure is a user error, and not a bug. But I've been playing and messing and picking and testing, and I just can't get it to import properly. Well, it may be importing properly and the problem is completely my not doing something right. =) I just need to find out what that "thing" is.

Whether I start with no accounts, or with a new account with a starting balance of 0 or a balance of what I actually have, whenever I try to import the OFX, or QFX, or QIF file my online bank can generate for me, every transaction that gets imported has a duplicate line with it's opposite amount. Meaning, a valid $300 deposit will also have a $300 withdrawl. And if I try to remove that line, it won't let me leave until I either allow it to automatically add a "split"(?) or manually add a line that counters the amount.

What's it doing? Why's it doing that? How can I keep it from happening? Best yet, is there some page or doc I can read that will explain it someone can point me to?
