Things have changed a great deal in the last 10 years. When I was in college we used punch cards and didn't even get to see the computer. We handed our deck to a *priest* who in turn handed it to the *high priest* who was the only one allowed to feed it into the card reader.

Linux is fine for wordprocessing and internet stuff, no problem there but modern college goes way beyond that. Mostly with CD based training incorporated into the clbuttrom and these are Windows and Mac only. IMHO it looks like another method for professors teaching less and worming out of work. Back in my day the preferred method was letting teaching asisstants teach parts of the undergraduate course. Today they offload it on some computer based course.

I could care less about corporate monopolies because there is little or nothing I can do about it. The same thing about open source and free software.

I use what works for me and if I have an equal choice between an open source program or a commercial one, all other things being equal, I will use the open source program.

To me, computers, Microsoft, Linux etc are just *things* I need to get my work done. The worship of operating systems or the philosophy of open source I leave to the fanatics.

Tell me about it. I just spent $115.00 on a math textbook for my daughter.
