Remote Linux Webserver Backup to a Windows PC
I posted to this newsgroup because our webserver is a Linux box and my reasoning was that someone here would have had the same need as we have. Thanks for the suggestions, however, we...

(Moe Trin)

Moe Trin, Thank you for your helpful comments. I ran tcpdump on my home linux firewall and used putty to ssh from a Windows machine at home into the firewall at work (fw1). This is what I found:

cat file1371 caused three packets to be received. The first one was 98B including headers (len 84). The second one was 1482B (len 1468). The third one was 182B (len 168).

cat file1372 caused two packets to be received. The first one was 98B including headers (len 84). The second one was 114B (len 100).

I suppose this shows that the outgoing large packet from fw1 was segmented somewhere on its way to my home office with the first segment being 100 Bytes. Apparently, the following segments did not make it. My firewall at home is Red Hat Linux release 9 (Shrike). I plan to update fw1 this weekend.

I have not yet figured out how to remotely run tcpdump on fw1without contaminating the output with my commands. (Can you suggest a method?) However, I will be there at 3:00 this afternoon for a meeting and I should be able to post some more information this evening. Bob
