Grub Error 18On 1 Jun 2006 14:14:05 -0700, jonfaquit staggered into the Black Sun and said: Please don't top-post. Message rearranged for easier reading. Always make sure nothing important will get messed up before deleting parbreastions with cfdisk. "Supposedly"? Either you deleted it, or you didn't, and your first paragraph says you did. Anyway, GRUB's looking for the filesystem onboot. If this 'Doze parbreastioning tool erased theboot parbreastion, you'd see error 18, as GRUB reads the parbreastion table to find out where it's supposed to start looking for its filesystem. I saw this same error when I erased all Linux parbreastions and installed 'Doze2K on my old laptop without reworking the MBR. "FDISKMBR" from my old DOS boot floppy cleared everything right up. Help needed with Installin and Parbreastioning 1509 Charles Takacs Right decission! So decide first which will be your "native" distro and install it as the master of the box, on it you will spent time to overcome the "steep learning slope... Red herring. Standard Windows solution--yuck. This is time-consuming and tedious. There are many Linux LiveCDs that can read NTFS. You could always boot from one of those and copy the data you need to retrieve over the local net to another machine. No. GRUB is a bootloader, not a parbreastion recovery tool. I think you may be looking for gparted. The gparted people put together a LiveCD; it's pretty nice and gives you a fairly good GUI interface for parbreastioning disks, resizing all types of filesystems, and moving parbreastions around. And if you have a floppy drive and a floppy disk, you can always create a DOS boot floppy and do "FDISKMBR", or you can use the "FIXMBR" command from the "UnRecovery Console" you can get to with a 'DozeXP install CD. That *may* be all you need to do--but you're probably going to have to use cfdisk or FDISK to set the remaining parbreastion containing your 'DozeXP to "active".
