...well, no, actually you don't. I mean if the above is ALL the experience you've EVER had with Windows...well you REALLY have no f***in clue AT ALL as to what you can do on a Win box.

As far as a production level operating system...it is. Only in the area of rendering is *nix a viable alternative in that Maya is ported to it. But you start talkin about high level video editing and encoding, graphic design and audio mixing...no, yer so the f*** far outta yer league you couldn't even BREATH.

And it's not only a matter of quite literarily HUNDREDS of specialized software application that won't run on Linux (even if you try using Wine), it's also a matter of hardware support. Often times even if there's a driver for a piece of hardware available for *nix it's usually a deficient alternative, which more often than not isn't even able to make full use of the hardware's functionality and efficiency.

Sorry Bumbles, but I spend quite a bit of time with *nix, I even use it for my web server and at one point I invested a considerable amount of my time (around three months straight) attempting to set it up as an alternative to Windows in regards to the software I use to ACTUALLY PRODUCE (something you *nix lusers can't seem to do very much of). The endeavor was a complete FAILURE, not only were the software alternatives slower and more cumbersome than the ones I was using on Windows, but in EVERY instance there was a minimum 10% loss in overall functionality (things you could do with the Win proggies that you couldn't do with the *nix alternatives). The problem is that most of that functionality was NOT the sort of thing that amateurs, like yourself, would ever need to use, so it was simply skipped. So if I was yer average spazzy lil Dell user playin around with MS Paint, then yes, *nix would be a viable alternative...but on an expert level...it couldn't come anywhere even f***in close.

Thank you for describing yer average *nix user so eloquently! Maybe if you were a little less dumb and had an OS that actually stimulated your knowledge and expertise you'd be able to actually produce something with some level of creativity...instead of just runnin at the mouth all day long about how Linux is teh greatest OS for...uh...er...all the things you apparently don't do with it. oO
