Handtweaking the CPU fan speed 2463
Rui Maciel I've encountered three different types of fans: 1) Those that have no speed control whatsoever...

Rui Maciel In my machines, the fan speed is determined by the fan itself. Some fans run at full speed all the time. Some have thermistor control where the hotter they get, the faster the fan turns (up to a point). My motherboard also has one fan header that turns on the fan once the motherboard determines it is too hot in the box. This is for an overheat fan. But the minimum set point is 72¡C, and since Intel demand I keep the processors under 70¡C, it is useless. Instead, I run that fan all the time.

So on my main machine, the front case fans (intake fans) run at full speed all the time. The two side of the case fans (also intake fans) run at full speed all the time. One exhaust fan at the back runs at full speed all the time. The two power-supply fans run at variable speed depending on the internal air temperature. The "overheat" exhaust fan runs all the time, but its speed depends on the internal air temperature. The two case exhaust fans on the side are variable speed determined by internal air temperature. The side fans mainly cool the 4 SCSI hard drives. The fans cooling the processors are variable speed depending on the internal air temperature.

On my machine, I see no way of controlling fan speeds with the OS, since this is done by the design of the fans themselves.
