OK..."lspci grep -i audio" gave me nothing at all. And finally, the text of the error message is as follows:

"Couldn't Open Audio Please check that: 1. You have the correct output plugin selected. 2. No other programs is blocking the sound card. 3. Your soundcard is configured properly."

I'm actually pleased to see that others have had the same problem with the Compaq EN; it means I'm not a TOTAL idiot here. It looks like I might have to invest in another soundcard. Still, I'd like to get this onboard sound working if at all possible.
