Hardware Configuration on DSL 3346
johnny bobby bee device IIRC, this is the problem I had and never bothered to work out;( drivers...

johnny bobby bee Which model is the computer? I have an EN 6400-6.4 (400MHz PII) with ESS sound which even Knoppix couldn't make a noise with. I have it running now, but as always, I've forgotten what was involved. I did find a useful website, but possibly it's the one you found:

The problem is that the sound device cannot be probed properly, so you have to tell Linux what is there.

Unfortunately, when I finally solve a frustrating problem, I have little enthusiasm for finding exactly what I did and documenting it. So I did a great many things, and I'm not certain what actually did the trick.

I think the critical bit is an alsa file inetc-modutils and-or etc-modprobe.d. I found conflicting information as to which of these were used by kernel 2.6, so I put it in both (the 'options' entry is a single line):

alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0 alias snd-card-0 snd-es18xx options snd-es18xx enable=1 isapnp=0 port=0x220 mpuport=0x388 fmport=0x330 irq=5 dma1=1 dma2=0

Possibly your numbers may be different, but these worked for me. I think I tried the Debian alsa configuration without success, but it did put a much larger alsa-base file than Debian did originally. I don't know if that was necessary. Certainly, if that's the Compaq you have, sound is possible.
