I have an ATI Remote Wonder II (USB) that was about $35, and it works fine--all buttons seen, etcetera. (The main problem that I had was Gentoo's ebuild system didn't build the lircatiusb module automatically, but YDistroMV.) There's a pretty comprehensive This is lacking in detail. If you already *have* an IR remote that's being used for another piece of equipment, but that remote doesn't have a compatible receiver that plugs into the serial or USB ports, you may not be able to get any sane data out of it. You could build your own receiver in that case, just remember that will require soldering and probably fiddling with irrecord to generate a sane config file. Not all programs have everything accessible via LIRC; xine has almost all of its stuff available, while gmplayer has a few things missing. If rhythmbox doesn't mention LIRC, you'll have to add support yourself. That may be more work than you want to do.
