Ok ic. So in effect, if you log in as a superuser, you would be running jack and the buttociated programs at a higher priority by default or is their something else that needs to be done? If not, it seems that the solution is to just do audio tasks as root? Would using su from a user login accomplish the same thing because as I understand it running as root is not always a good thing?

Ok I have heard of that one. Gotcha! Thank you for a very informative post and as for the registry, IMHO it works rather well, until it doesn't work and then you had better have a backup or chances are it's re-install time. It's only happened to me once, but that was enough for me to learn the hard way.
