Because you're reading an *.advocacy newsgroup. It's deliberately designed to shunt unwanted traffic away from better forums. People who think they are promoting Linux...

There are other low-latency options that alter the way the kernel schedules programs and what is preemptable (preemption is when the OS pauses a program and gives the computer to another process), but I haven't needed them. I just needed to allow user programs to use the realtime scheduler.

Well yes but then you loose all the security of using a unix system. A simple wrong command can take down everything.

Except Jack won't let users connect to it that didn't start it. Yes, you can start jack as root by using 'su' but then you have to continue in that environment when you use the rest of your audio programs. I tried doing the su jack thing but never went beyond that because it is safer and more friendly just to fix it so that jack can be used low-latency. For many months I did my audio work without the realtime stuff but I had to stop using gnome for one...

It is really better just to setup realtime stuff. It has gotten really easy now and continues to do so. See

I often have to edit the registry to fix problems caused by spyware. I work at a college and we support student computers most of which are complete messes. I also use the registry pragmatically when scanning computers for various protections. Students are not allowed to fully utilize our network unless they show that they are up to date in patches and virus utilities. We may soon start requiring spyware utilities as well since spyware increases our workload so much.

I have also had trouble when I decided to uninstall MS Office. It went through the process, said it was gone, but was still there. I tried to delete the files and the system wouldn't allow it even when the permissions where right. I got mad, booted into Linux, mounted the drive and deleted the files. When I booted back into windows I was greeted with about 50 error messages because the registry had Office so threaded throughout it that it couldn't be removed. Was pretty funny actually.

That was a long time ago, space is better now and I don't care if some 100Meg program that I never use resides on my windows parbreastions. Uninstalling Office might work better now to, in the 97 days it basically became an unremovable part of the OS once installed.
