Yes, I know .. it is a Windows user approach. However, I figured that the person must be a very new user and one who possibly did not understand the installation process (and who had not RTFM). That taken together with the thought that he must be a Windows user trying out Linux caused me to point him in a Windows-Like direction for his first baby steps. Problems wNIS Clients in Compat Mode I have (3) RHEL machines - (2) are RHEL3-I386 and other is RHEL4-AMD64. I'm using OpenAFS for authentication and using NIS to push out... You are correct in your whole analysis of the way he "should have" fixed the problem. However, did he have a rescue image -- probably not since this appeared to be his virgin installation and so forth. So, that would have sent this otherwise clueless newbie off on another chase. You may know that although I first tried out Linux back in the early 1990's, I was primarily a DOS and CP-M person (after big iron) until addicted to Windows with Win3.1 ... I restarted my love of Linux two years ago and have not looked back, indeed completely converting my personal and business systems over last year. Having said all of that, I am not sure that the harsh Socratic approach to teaching new users about Linux is the best way to win converts. Now, I don't want to hijack this thread or even move into another thread with everyone carping about the various methods of teaching people to be self-reliant.
