This is dated information. Robbins is "out" at Microsoft.

I haven't used gentoo. I have googled for help and found various wiki's which have been built by the gentoo community. These offer useful advice and the help can be distribution independant. Their community is a good thing, because they are part of the movement to make free software better.

This is a very good example:

Gentoo users buy into the idea that software is only "good enough" for your system if it specifically compiled for it. That is a myth, IMO. I know I don't have a week waiting for an install to complete. The first time I heard that it took that long, I thought the guy was joking.

I think I'll stick with Slackware because it's easy enough for me to setup a system which will be self consistent. Any released version of slackware, plus official patches is self consistent. What are you doing to break consistency? If you are adding packages which aren't part of slackware, then document what you have done. When the time comes to upgrade you may have to recompile those packages to match the libraries in the upgrade. That approach is somewhat similar to the gentoo approach, but a lot less involved.
